Protein Structure Flashcards
Name the four type of protein structures
Primary, Secondary, Tertiary and Quaternary
What is Primary Structure?
-Sequence of amino acids make up protein
What is Secondary Structure?
-Conformation of polypeptide chain
What type of bonding results in the conformation of the polypeptide chain?
-Hydrogen bonding (Intermolecular) between R groups
Name the three types of secondary protein structure
-Alpha, Beta and Triple Helix
Describe bonding and structure of Alpha Helices
- X1 Single Polypeptide Chain
- Hydrogen bonding
Describe the bonding and structure of Beta Sheets
- Beta Sheets I and II
- Runs Parallel and Antiparallel
- Turns between strands
What type of forces do Triple Helices have?
- VDW
- X3 right handed helices
What is Tertiary Structure?
- Interactions between R Groups
- Stabilises Structure
What does Tertiary Structure determine for a protein?
-Globular or Fibrous Shaped Protein.
Name X4 interactions in Tertiary Structure.
- Hydrophobic Interactions
- Electrostatic Interactions
- Hydrophobic Interactions
- Hydrogen Bonds
What is Quaternary Structure?
- Combination of SEVERAL different polypeptide sub-units
- Contain Prosthetic Groups
What is a Prosthetic Group?
-Non-Protein group that can bind to a protein
What is Cooperativity?
-When the binding of one sub-units increases affinity of other simultaneous sub-units to their substrate (change shape)
