It is located in West Africa. Some countries that border Mali include Burkina Faso, Algeria and Niger.

Mali is number 176 on the HDI, with an average life expectancy of 55 years and 8.6 years of schooling.

Why is water an issue?
Rainfall is low
Desertification is spreading (65% of the country is desert or semi desert.)
2/3 of the population does’t have access to clean water
10% of infants die before their first birthday.
20% of the population don’t have access to sanitation facilities.
15,000 children die every year for diarrhoea.

How many people have they helped?
205,000 people accessing clean water.
208,000 people accessing sanitation facilities.
How have they helped?
They have build wells so the village can access clean water. They have also taught men how to build these wells, so if they break they can fix them.
They have build rainwater harvesting systems, so that any rainwater that falls can be collected.
Water aid has financed the construction of the water network.
What did they do in the Pigue Village?
In the PIGUE VILLAGE (located in South Mali) they had no clean water. Children as young as 8 had to do manual labour each day to get unclean water.
Water aid was helped by building wells so that they can get clean water.
How sustainable is it?
They select APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY.
They also teach people skills which can be passed down through generations.
It favours the future and present generations. It also helps local people and makes use of local materials It is environmentally sustainable, as clean water can be used to water crops.
However isn’t sustainable as it relies on peoples donations which could run out. It can also create dependency, as the aid is continuous and long term.
