Background
Located in east London (around Canary Warf)
Built in the 1800s.
By 1890 it was the most successful and busiest port in the world.
By 1980 all the docks had closed and become derelict
In the mid 1980s the LDDC began to change the landscape and regenerate the area
Plans were to improve housing, transport links and opportunities for business
Part of the regeneration was to improve land use
Problems
60 million tons of cargo a year
1/10 of London was empty and derelict (contaminated land)
7 million square feet
High unemployment with no future
Lack of basic services
Terrace housing in desperate need of repair
Economic regeneration
CBD = Canary Warf.
West berry punter was the first business to move in
Jubilee line was extended so that it offered easy access / transport links
London city airport (flys to 18 destinations)
Employment went from 27,000 to 71,000
Number of business went from 1,000 to 2,400
Unemployment went from 14.2% to 7.4%
Social regeneration
77,000 new residents
22,000 new homes and well as the provision of low cost housing
New shopping centres
Contains the university of East London
Over £100 million spend on health, education and job training
Environmental generation
200,000 trees were planted
17 conservation areas
706 HA of derelict land has been reclaimed
150 HA of open space has been created
