Water Flashcards
why is water a dipole molecule
Uneven distribution of charge throughout
partially positive oxygen
partially negative hydrogen
ionic substances are attracted to the charges water has forming an ionic bond
what bonds are formed between water molecules
hydrogen bonds
what is the definition of a dipole
unequal distribution of electrons shared in an atom. has separate charges.
what are the properties of water
good solvent (polar molecules can dissolve it it)
high specific heat capacity
liquid at room temperature
can be used in blood and xylem for transport
what does hydrophobic and hydrophilic mean
hydrophobic- water hating (lipids/ fats) does not dissolve in water
hydrophilic- water loving ( salts/ ionic compounds) dissolves in water
why does water have a high heat capacity and why is that an advantage
high specific heat capacity- large amounts of energy needed to break many hydrogen bonds
large inputs of energy cause small temperature rises
advantage since aquatic animals environments do not rapidly change + avoids body temperature changing rapidly
