Water Flashcards
Properties of water
Polar-bio solvent-chem reactions occur
H bonds - take a lot of energy to overcome High specific heat capacity
Latent heat of vaporisation -cooling effect
Cohesion and surface tension - habitat
Transparent-photosynthesis under water
Ice floats-habitats
Uses
Metabolism -condensation and hydrolysis
Solvent -polar-dissolves ions
Cooling-high latent heat
Transparent-plants photosynthesis
Support-turgid cells

What happens to cells in pure water
•
What happens in pure water?
Animal cell will eventually burst – CYTOLYSIS (red blood cells are haemolysed – can you think where this name comes from?)
• Plantcells-swelling cytoplasm & vacuole will push against the cell wall which will stop the cell getting any larger- TURGID
What happens to cells in conc sugar solution
•
Animal cell: cell contents shrink & membrane wrinkles – this creates bumps/wrinkles – called CRENATION (cells are crenated)
Plant cell - cytoplasm & vacuole shrink (the cell becomes FLACID) and plasma membrane pulls away from cell wall- PLASMOLYSI
