WA Onboard Fire Q and A Flashcards
Which section of the QRH are the Smoke/Fire in the cargo compartment (Main Deck) drills found?
Section 8 - Fire Protection
When would you complete” Smoke Fire or Fumes” drill?
When you have Smoke, Fire or fumes from an unknown source. If you have a positive indication of smoke, fire or fumes on the main deck then refer to the drill for Smoke /Fire in the Cargo Compartment (Main Deck).
How do smoke drills describe the top and bottom deck?
The drill says (main deck) or (Belly) next to it.
Which conversions have memory actions for Smoke/Fire in the Cargo Compartment (Main Deck)
IAI & Boeing 737-800 NG
How can you tell which airframe has which cargo conversion?
The fleet into sheet held in the glare shield storage and on EFOS> Pilot information.
What are the memory actions for Smoke/Fire in the Cargo Compartment (main deck) on G-JMCU, an IAI converted aircraft?
- Oxygen Masks and regulators - ON 100%
- Smoke goggles (if required) - ON
- Crew communication - Establish
- Cockpit Door - Close
- CARGO DEPRESS switch - Push (light on)
- ——————————————————————-
Every drill for Smoke/Fire in the Cargo Compartment requires the crew to don oxygen masks. Why?
Because every drill will result in the aircraft being un-pressurised and because smoke or fumes could enter the flight deck.
If a crew were to conduct the full Smoke/Fire in the Cargo Compartment and Expedited Descent Manoeuvre for Freighter Airplanes because of an incorrect warning, what would the reaction of the company be?
Relief that our crew is safe. The company would be interested in how the drills worked practically and be supportive of the crew, if any trauma is caused. The company would celebrate to the customer that their cargo is safe.
Why is it important to know the whole Expedited Descent Manoeuvre for Freighter Airplanes?
Because that allows us to use the relevant part of it if a smoke or fire condition presents on the approach or departure for example.
In an expedited descent manoeuvre for freighter airplanes commenced from 25,000ft, at what point would you commence descent?
50nm from the airfield.
When flying an expedited descent manoeuvre for freighter airplanes, at what speed would you be at 3000ft AAL and at what point would you start slowing for landing?
VMO and maintain until 15nm from touchdown.
How could you use the fix page to assist in spatial awareness during an Expedited Descent Manoeuvre for freighter aeroplanes?
You could set your target airfield in a fix page and then draw the reciprocal of the inbound course with a 15nm ring to highlight the point to slow up. A 50nm ring may assist descent from 25,000ft. There are many more ideas which may help.
What is the advice for an “Off Airfield landing”?
The cargo smoke detection or fire suppression systems do not provide an indication of the severity of the fire. Therefore, continued cargo compartment fire warnings alone should not be considered an indication of an uncontrollable fire. The crew must assess the situation and use good judgment to determine the safest course of action. All immediately available resources should be considered prior to executing an off-airport landing or a ditching.
List some of the threats posed by an Expedited Descent Manoeuvre for Freighter Airplanes.
- Terrain workload
- Communication problems due to oxygen masks
- Loss of spatial awareness due to a quick approach to a nearest suitable airfield
- Smoke entering the cockpit
- Unstable approach
The LCC/TRE may ask crew to describe management strategies for threats listed.
List some errors likely to be made when completing the Smoke/Fire in the Cargo Compartment (main deck) or the Expedited Descent Manoeuvre for Freighter Aeroplanes.
- Use of the incorrect checklist
- Unable to find the correct checklist
- Incorrect pack switching.
- Confusion about associated cautions and warnings related to the un-pressurised state of the aircraft.
- Levelling at 3000ft altitude rather than 3000ft AAL.
- Confusion over configuration speeds and MCP speed setting during deceleration phase.
