Q

What is sensory memory?

A

brief retention of raw sensory information that is to be filtered (is sent to STM or is lost)

9
Q

Why do we need sensory memory instead of just having the sensory info just go straight to STM?

A

There is too much sensory info thus there needs to be a mechanism to filter out the unimportant stim

Q

Briefly describe the following types of sensory memory
a) visible persistence
b) informational persistence

A

a) the afterimage of visual information that remains visible for a brief period of time after its physical presentation
b) the information that remains briefly when presented w/ a certain piece of info for a short amount of time

11
Q

How does the duration of visual persistence relate to stimulus duration? why?

A

the longer that the stimulus is presented the shorter the persistence after the stimulus is gone. This is b/c visual persistence starts right when the stimulus is presented thus since visual persistence can only percieve a stimulus for a short period of time the longer you show the stimulus the less time is given for the persistence when the stimulus is not presented

Q

a) What is the difference b/w a whole report and a partial report?
b) what types of memory does this relate to? - 2
c) What do the results from partial reporting suggest wrt how much information you can apprehend?

A

a)
1. whole = after being presented w/ an array of stimuli you are asked to report all of the items that you remember
2. partial = after being presented w/ an array of stimuli you are asked to report all of the items that you remember w/in a specific section of the array
b) sensory memory - informational persistence
c) they suggest that since you can are able to remember more items when cued for a specific section that you actually apprehend all of the items w/in the array for a brief period of time

a) central executive
b) visuo-spatial sketchpad
c) episodic buffer
d) phonological loop

A

a) the decision center that receives all the sensory memory that has been attended to and must direct that information
b) the area that receives visual information and sends it to the LTM
c) the area that retrieves eposodic info from the LTM

Q

STM is known as all these except
a) dynamic
b) crystalized
c) active
d) disruptable
e) they’re all related to STM

17
Q

LTM is a ________ system while STM is a ________ system
a) dynamic, static
b) crystalized, fluid
c) static, dynamic
d) fluid, crystalized

18
Q

T or F - all information in the STM is currently being attended to

19
Q

_____ memory is a type of memory system that allows for active manipulation of information

20
Q

Describe WMC

A

working memory capacity = the amount of information that we can attend to at once

21
Q

We found that ppl w/ a low WMC were able to detect certain stimuli in the unattended ear compared to ppl w/ a high WMC in the dichotic listening test. Why was this?

A

the ppl w/ low WMC are not as good at ignoring the unattended ear thus they are more likely to hear certain stimuli from that ear vs ppl who are really good at ignoring that ear.
