W3 - ART - Mani Flashcards
Describe minimal intervention (MI)
Maximum preservation of natural tooth structure to maintain strength and integrity
What are the parts of Risk Assessment (5)
Medical Hx
Social Hx
Dental Hx
OH + Diet
Lifestyle
What is ART?
Atraumatic Restorative Technique
- Conservative method of managing caries using only hand instruments when conventional means are not practical, viable, or possible (no rotary instruments, electricity)
Principles of ART (5)
(common exam question)
Hand excavation of caries and cavity preparation
Incomplete caries removal
Minimal removal of tooth structure
AgF application (sometimes)
GIC or IRM applied as restorative material
Indications of ART (7)
- General dentistry
- Treatment camps
- School dental health program
- Disabilites
- Elderly or home-bound patients
- Non-cooperative patients
- As a temporary solution (waiting for GA)
What is IRM?
Intermediate Restorative Material
- Used in ART
Contraindications of ART (4)
Swelling
Abscess / fistula
Severe/prolonged toothache
Cavity inaccessible (Class II)
How to treat Class 2 lesions without breaking marginal ridge
Tunnel
- Most class 2’s fail bc once the natural marginal ridge is gone, strength is greatly reduced
Advantages of ART (4)
- Conservative of tooth structure
- Painless - good for anxious children (no LA)
- Infection control simplified (no aerosols)
- Cost effective
Armamentarium (tools) of ART (7)
- Mirror
- Explorer
- Tweezer
- Spoon excavators
- Hatchet
- Applier/carver (resto)
- Mixing pad and spatula
ART materials (6)
Cotton rolls/pellets
Vasoline
Mylar strip
Wedges
GIC / Comp / Compomer
AgF
Material of choice in ART + why (3)
GIC
Good chemical bondage with tooth structure
Non-irritant
Fluoride release
Advantages of Silver Fluoride (5)
- Antimicrobial
- Promotes remineralisation
- Cheap
- Non-invasive
- Can be administed by therapists, hygienists
How to use AgF
How close can AgF be to pulp?
1.0 mm minimum
If 0.5 mm, do not proceed
