W26-L12: BMI and protein-enery malnutrition Flashcards
What is BMI?
Weight in kg / (height in meters) ^2
What are the BMI ranges?
Underweight (<18.5)
Normal (18.5-25)
Overweight (25-30)
What is protein-energy malnutrition?
inadequate intake of macronutrients, proteins will not used for structures until there is enough energy for the brain
What are the two types of protein-energy malnutrition?
kwashiorkor (protein lack) and marasmus.
What is protein sparing?
protein will be used structurally when enough energy is provided by carbohydrate and fat for protein to be used structurally and not for gluconeogenesis.
What is the cause of kwashiorkor and marasmus?
kwashiorkor = lack of protein
marasmus = lack of any food
How do you re-feed after starvation?
Small quantities to allow gut to regenerate
What is cachexia?
An extreme example of the
loss of muscular and adipose tissue in terminal illness. The condition is caused in part by high levels of TNF alpha
Can cachexia be resolved by over-nutrition?
No as TNF-a causes immune system-mediated destruction of tissue
