(W) Water footprints Flashcards
water footprints
a measure of our individual water use, and our impact on the planet
total volume of fresh water used to produce the goods/services used by an individual or community
water security
having enough water to supply the population and keep them healthy, while having a sustainable economy, and not damaging the conditions of future generations
reliable availability of an acceptable quantity/quality of water for health, livelihoods and production
features of water security (4)
- drinking water: everyone has access to water for hygiene and health
- ecosystems: animals/plants have enough water
- water related hazards/climate change: people are protected from dangers related to water (e.g. pollution, drought)
- economic development: there is enough water for processes such as agriculture and manufacture
ways to achieve water security (4)
good governance (fair and democratic government)
peace and political stability (lack of conflict)
financing (funding for water products)
transboundary cooperation (co-operation with other governments when rivers cross borders)
