- roads and utilities (water/electricity) already exist
- near to facilities - shops, places of work
- less commuting for people living there as they are located in urban areas
- easier to get planning permission for
- sites in cities not left derelict

- have to be cleaned up
- are polluted
- limited space
- less green spaces nearby
- restrictions on road networks

A
- pleasant countryside appeals to home owners
- land is cheaper so plots are larger
- shops/businesses provide local facilities
- more space for gardens
- new sites don’t need cleaning
- no restrictions on existing road networks

- cuts into the rural area
- decreases visual appeal of the countryside
- already brownfield sites to use
- utilities/roads not provided
- far away from shops and facilities
- longer commuting times
- harder to get planning permission
