(UR) Migration Flashcards
migrants
people who move from one place to another
net migration
difference between the number of immigrants and emigrants of an area over a period of time
emigrants
people who leave/move out of an area
immigrants
people who enter/move in to an area
Where are people moving to in the UK?
- London and major cities
- the south east
- there are cluster of immigrants around major cities; people want to live near each other
- in urban and not rural areas
Why are people living in these places?
- London has more immigrants because it is a capital/global city and is well connected to other areas/countries
- it also has lots of job opportunities and better education
- people want to be close to family so settle in clusters
- areas outside major cities allow people to commute to work
- people can’t stay in their home country because of war, conflict, famine etc.
positive effects of migration on the UK
-immigrants can fill jobs that are in high demand (doctors, nurses)
- increased spending and economy
- spreading of cultures
- international students aid research and innovation
- young workers pay taxes into the economy
- more money can go to failing schools from tax revenue
negative effects of migration on the UK
- movement of people can have an adverse effect on terrorism/people trafficking
- increased population puts pressure on services
- new services have to be built
- immigrants sometimes struggle to adapt to a new culture and laws
- more housing has to be built on greenfield sites
- cheaper labour so British nationals are paid less
areas of low population density
- around the coast
- rural areas
- Scottish highlands
- south of Scotland
- north of England
- rural/east Wales
-Cornwall (south east)
reasons for low population density
-rural areas have less jobs available are less transport links, so attract less people
- areas further north have harsher weather and less industry
- difficult areas to build houses on
-south of Scotland is empty of cities, so people go up or down instead
- expensive in Cornwall because of tourism
- fewer roads in rural areas
- houses and communities are spaced further apart in rural areas
- lower housing density because of cheaper land in rural areas
areas of high population density
- major cities
- around major cities
- south east
- midlands
reasons for high population density
- job opportunities; the midlands have industry and factory work (Toyota, Rolls royce)
- areas around cities have easy access to the cities and places of work
- south east has more job opportunities as it is closer to London
- land in the south east is lower, so is easier to build on
- jobs pay more further south
-London is a global city; so is well connected to other countries, making it easy to access for people moving from abroad
