Vocabulary - Structural Flashcards
Ductility
The property of a material that permits it to undergo plastic deformation when subject to tensile force.
Stiffness
The property of a material that enables it to resist deformation.
Deformation
The change in dimensions of a material.
Elasticity
The property of a material that enables it to return to its original size and shape when the load to which it has been subjected is removed.
Shear
A result when two parallel forces having opposite sense of direction act on a body, tending to cause one part of the body to slide past an adjacent part.
Neutral Axis
The line corresponding to the neutral surface for a cross section of a beam.
Plasticity
A material that does not return to its original dimensions when the load causing deformation is removed. The opposite quality to elasticity.
Elastic Limit
The unit stress beyond which the deformations increase in a faster ratio than the applied loads.
Yield Point
The stress at which deformation occurs. Material: Structural Steel
Ultimate Strength
(Ultimate Stress)
The unit stress that occurs just at or before rupture. Material: Structural Steel
Modulus of Elasticity
The ratio of the unit stress to the unit deformation. Represented by [E] = Indicates the stiffness of a material
