The City Beautiful Movement (1890s)
• Launched a classical revival moment through the country • Led to a greater awareness of city planning • Resulted in a profusion of civic centers, dome-topped structures and grand plazas • Promoted monumental and grandiose
Renaissance Planning
Space was created amid a cramped medieval town for a grand piazza, where a more modest square once stood.
Baroque Planning
Type of urban planning links important monuments, places, and views with broad streets and avenues (ex: Rome)
Picturesque
A garden design style characterized by wild ruggedness; in architecture, asymmetrical combinations of form and variety of textures (ex: NY Central Park)
The Second Empire Style
Mid to late 19th century - used for prestige and authority
