VO2 max Flashcards
what is VO2 max
measure of individuals capacity for aerobic resynthesis
- max capacity for making ATP through the aerobic pathway
what does high VO2 max require
integrated and high level resposne of diverse physiological systems (pulmonary, CV, muscle systems) to uptake transport, and utilise oxygen
how can we measure VO2 max
ramp incremental - consistent PO increases
step incremental - PO increases in steps and is maintained for an amount of time
constant intensity - sharp increase in PO to a constant intensity
what are the results of different tests (PO and VO2max)
VO2 is consistent between all tests
PO at that intensity differs
- highest in ramp, lowest in constant load
can’t sustain constant intensity in severe domain for very long
how can you control for differences in body comp
normalising by lean body mass eliminates sex based differences in VO2 max (when matched for training level)
do you need a high VO2 max to be successful
necessary but not the only factor determining aerobic capacity
how does VO2 max decline with age
8% decline per decade
both males and females
regardless of training
what is the relationship with ventilation and VO2 max tests
ventilation shows a curvilinear relationship during the VO2 max test
what are the benefits of a ramp incremental test
- can determine exercise capacity (VO2 max)
- can identify cardiorespiratory response thresholds
- can use lactate or ventilation show the same thresholds
