VITICULTURE Flashcards
Give an example of grape varieties that produce their best fruit on different soils?
*Chardonnay- enjoys (calcareous, chalky, & limestone soils).
*Merlot-does best on clay soils
*Cab Sauv- on sandy Gravely soils.
What soil are best for grape growing?
*Well-drained poor soils
How late- spring frost affect the vines of Chablis, Germany, and how grape growers combat it?
*By damaging new shoots, and that will reduce the yields!
*Smudge pots are placed between the rows of the vines to combat the frost.
Which method is used in New World Countries to combat spring frost?
*Aspersion system- spray the vines with water, the cold air will freeze the water and remains at 0c.
*Helicopters are used in New Zealand and Australia!
Name the European & American species of vines?
*European=vitis vinifera
*American=vitis rupestris, vitis riparia, vitis berlandieri.
What are Hybrids?
*cross between 2 different species of vines.
What means Organic & Biodynamic wines?
*These are wines which reflects the specific terroir of the vineyard.
*Neither uses: pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
What is Natural wine?
*Produced from grapes that have been grown organically or biodynamically and hand harvested.
*Without any addition of yeasts & chemicals, except low levels of Sulphur Dioxide (SO2).
*Generally bottled unfiltered and unfined, no rebalancing of structural components are permitted.
Describe Botrytis cinerea aka Noble Rot?
*Noble rot develops under the right climatic conditions such as early misty mornings followed by dry & sunny afternoons.
*These cause the grapes to dry out & shrivel like a raisins.
*High in sugar acid and flavor.
Describe Coulure?
*Caused by cold or wet weather=non-pollination of some of the blossom at flowering time.
*This will reduce the crop, but may improve the quality of the grapes due to the lower yields.
