Visual system Flashcards
What are the fields of each eye?
Temporal field
Nasal field
What are the parts of the retina in each eye?
Temporal retina
Nasal retina
How does light enter the eye?
Diagonally - crosses from temporal field onto nasal retie or vice versa
What are the parts of the visual system?
Eye Optic nerve Chiasm Optic tract Lateral geniculate nucleus Radiation (inferior or superior) Primary visual cortex
Where are the inferior radiations found in the brain?
Temporal lobe
Where are the superior radiations found in the brain?
Parietal lobe
How is vision into the eye divided?
Into quadrates
Where do neurones on the temporal retina synapse?
Ipsilateral LGN
Where do neurones on the nasal retina synapse?
Contralateral LGN
Describe the path of a neurone from the superior temporal quadrant
Passes into optic nerve
At the chiasm - stays on ipsilateral side
Passes through the optic tract
Synapses in the ipsilateral LGN
Travels in the superior radiation to the primary visual cortex
Describe the path of a neurone from the inferior temporal quadrant
Passes into optic nerve
At the chiasm - stays on ipsilateral side
Passes through the optic tract
Synapses in the ipsilateral LGN
Travels in the inferior radiation to the primary visual cortex
Describe the path of a neurone from the superior nasal quadrant
Passes into optic nerve
At the chiasm - crosses into contralateral side
Passes through the optic tract
Synapses in the contralateral LGN
Travels in the superior radiation to the primary visual cortex
Describe the path of a neurone from the inferior nasal quadrant
Passes into optic nerve
At the chiasm - crosses into contralateral side
Passes through the optic tract
Synapses in the contralateral LGN
Travels in the inferior radiation to the primary visual cortex
What is the visual field defect with a lesion in the optic nerve?
Monocular visual loss of ipsilateral side
What is the visual field defect with a lesion in the optic chiasm?
Bitemporal hemianopia - loss of temporal field on both sides
