What are risk factors for meningitis?
CSF defects Spinal procedures Endocarditis Diabetes Splenectomy Crowded population
What investigations should you do for suspected meningitis?
Blood cultures
FBC, U+Es, CRP
Lumbar puncture
Where is the lumbar puncture done?
Between L4-5
How is meningitis managed?
Supportive
- pain relief
- IV fluids
Medical
- IV ceftriaxone
- dexamethasone
Why is dexamethasone given?
Prevent hearing loss
What are complications of meningitis?
Sepsis
DIC - N.meningitides
Raised ICP
Cerebral oedema
