Glial Cells Flashcards
What are the types of glial cells?
Astrocytes
Oligodendrocytes
Microglia
What are the roles of astrocytes?
Structural support Nutrition of neurones Re-uptake of neurotransmitters Maintain ionic environment Help form BBB
How do astrocytes provide energy for neurones?
Astrocytes produce lactate - transferred to neurones
Via glucose-lactate shuttle
How do astrocytes reuptake neurotransmitters?
Have transporters for transmitters - to keep extracellular concentration low
What ion do astrocytes help to buffer?
K+
How do astrocytes buffer potassium?
Take up K+
What is the effect of too much K+ in ECF?
Could lead to depolarisation
What are the roles of the oligodendrocytes?
Responsible for myelinating axons
How many axons does each oligodendrocyte myelinate?
Many
What are the roles of the microglia?
Immunocompetent cells
- recognise foreign material
- phagocytosis
