Viruses Flashcards
Obligate Intracellular Parasites
viruses depend on host for survival
Virion
complete infective viral particle composed of core DNA/RNA
4 Stages of Viral Growth
- attachment 2. penetration 3. uncoating (caspid) 4. replication (dna/rna)
then > release and spread!
Viruses Spread by:
Blood, Lymph, Nerves
Humoral Immunity
b-cells. antibodies: IgA (mucous membranes), IgG + IgM (neutralize in blood)
Cell Mediated Immunity
t cells. natural killer cells, lymphokines produced
Herpes Virus Family:
simplex, varicella/zoster, epstein barr, Cytomegalovirus (CMV)
Herpes Simplex
most frequent oral viral infection.
Primary + Secondary stages
Herpetic Whitlow
finger/nails infected with herpes simplex
Apthous Ulcers
not viral. confused w herpes.
painful. usually involves non-keratinized tissue
Epstein Barr
linked to infectious mononucleosis –
palatal petechiae is an early sign ^
Coxsackie Virus
[picornavirus family]
hand, foot, mouth disease.
fecal > oral.
self limiting.
Koplik spots
sign of measles, spots on buccal mucosa
Hep A
oral > fecal
highly contagious
*pooled gamma globulin injection can prevent disease post exposure!
Hep B
blood + bodily fluids.
highest occupational risk
