Blood Disorders Flashcards
Anemia : oral manifestations
pallor, angular cheilitis, erythema/atrophy of oral mucosa, loss of filiform/fungiform papillae on dorsum of tongue
Iron Deficient Anemia
not enough iron supplied to bone marrow for RBC development
menstrual bleeding, gastro bleeding, poor iron absorption, pregnancy/infancy
Pernicious Anemia
deficiency of intrinsic factor (parietal cells in stomach) > absorption of B12 affected
Folic Acid / B12 Anemia
dietary deficiencies/malnutrition > alcoholism/pregnancy
Thalassemia (Mediteranean or Cooley) Anemia
inherited disorders of hemoglobin synthesis. can be major or minor. “salt n pepper” radiographs
Sickle Cell Anemia
RBS have sickle shape with decreased Oxygen
inherited
black, women, under 30yo
Sickle Cell: clinically
loss of trabeculation causing large, irregular marrow spaces *can be seen on radiograph - bone
Agranulocytosis
WBC disorder, decrease in neutrophils. requires med consult.
Primary + Secondary (drug/chemical induced, ie. chemo)
Cyclic Neutropenia
type of agranulocytosis -
cyclic decrease in circulating neutrophilic leukocytes.
Leukemia
malignant neoplasms of blood.
abnormal WBC’s
sudden onset, deadly
oral: gingival enlargement, bleeding, petechiae, ecchymosis, NUG
Ecchymosis
small, flat hemoragic patch
Stages of Hemostasis
transient vasoconstriction formation of platelet plug blood coagulation clot retraction clot dissolution (fibrinolysis)
Thrombocytopenia
platelet count less than 100k/mm
Hemophilia
clotting defects
Type A - more common. deficiency of plasma
Type B- “Christmas disease”
