Squamous Epithelium Tumors - Papilloma
benign, from HPV. small raised red or white, solitary, asymptomatic. can be lasered off
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
most common malignancy in oral cavity. raised mass than can invade lymph/bone/connective tissue.
floor of mouth, tongue, soft palate, tonsular and retromolar areas most common.
Basal Cell Carcinoma
most common cancer of head/neck region.
UV light, skin cancer.
small necrotic ulcer “rodent ulcer”.
surgical excision.
Salivary Gland Tumors
Pleomorphic Adenoma, Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma, Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma
Pleomorphic Adenoma
mixed epithelial + connective tissue benign tumor.
most common salivary gland tumor
“many shapes”
painless, slow growing. surgical removal but can recur
Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma
malignant. unencapsulated.
found on parotid or minor salivary glands on palate
Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma
[cylindroma] salivary tumor. malignant. most common on parotid.
may be painful.
Odontogenic Tumors
derived from tooth-forming structures.
ameloblastoma, odontoma
Ameloblastoma
odontogenic. usually in ramus of mandible. benign but if in maxilla can cause death if infiltrates vital organs
Odontoma
odontogenic. benign. composed of enamel/cementum/pulp. compound (anterior, resembles teeth) or complex (opposite)
found in adolescents - noticed when tooth fails to erupt due to blockage
Lipoma
soft tissue tumor. benign. fat cells. yellowish mass on buccal mucosa in 40+
Neurofibroma + Schwannoma
nerve tissue tumor. benign. usually on tongue.
