Endocrine disorders result from:
too much/too little hormone produced, gland dysfunction, hormone control/production problems
Hyperpituitarism
caused by tumor/adenoma, causes excess growth hormone
Gigantism = adolescents
Acromegaly = adults, rare
Hyperpituitarism symptoms/changes
facial = max/mand and max sinus enlargement (deepens voice), frontal bossing mucosal = thickened lips, macroglossia1
Hyperthyroidism
excess production of thyroid hormone which controls metabolism.
common in women, can be caused by Grave’s Disease (autoimmune)
Hyperthyroidism: Clinically
goiter, rosy complexion, excessive sweating, exophthalmos (eyes protruding) - premature exfoliation/eruption in children, rapid caries/perio disease, burning tongue
Hypothyroidism
decrease output of thyroid hormone.
Cretinism = children
Myxedema = adolescent/adults
can be caused by Hashimoto (autoimmune)
Hypothyroidism: clinically
Cretinism = thick lips, macroglossia, delayed eruption. Myxedema = enlarged tongue, slow metabolism, weight gain, hair loss
Hyperparathyroid
parathyroid aids in calcium/phosphorus metabolism.
“stones, bones, groans, moans!”
Hyperparathyroid: clinically
tooth mobility, uni/multiocular radiolucencies “brown tumors”, “ground glass”,
Diabetes: oral symptoms
candidiasis, mucomycosis, enlarged parotid gland, xerostomia
Acanthosis nigricans
skin disorder associated w type 2 diabetes. brown in folds
Adreanal Gland
found on kidney’s. produces sex hormone, balances salt/sugar.
Cortisol is one hormone it regulates/releasees
Addisons Disease
adrenal gland dysfunction. hypO
causes bronzing of the skin and melanotic macules on oral mucosa
Cushing Syndrome
[hypercortisolism]
“moon face”
