What is herpes varicella?
chicken pox!
acute eruption of fever, chills, pruritic and erythematous macules and papules starting on face/scalp and spreading to trunk and extremities, evolving to vesicles with cleear fluid

How do you treat herpes varicella?
supportive treatment and acyclovir
What is herpes zoster?
shingles! “grouped vesicles with erythema”, breakout of erythematous papules and vesicles along dermatome; may come with burning, pain/paresthesia, malaise, myalgia
does not cross midline
how do you treat herpes zoster?
antivirals - acyclovir, supportive
What’s the difference between herpes simplex 1 and 2?
1 - on mouth, valtrex, abreva gel
2 - on genitals, with –virs
What is verruca vulgaris?
WARTS! proliferations of skin and mucosa and commonly fingers, dorsal hands, sites prone to trauma
What is the cause of warts?
HPV
What is the treatment of verruca vulgaris?
OTC salicylic acid, cryosurgery, imiquimod
What is condylomata acuminata?
genital warts from HPV “Cauliflower like lesions”
How do you treat condylomata acuminata?
imiquimod, cryosurgery
What is molluscum contiagiosum?
single or multiple, rounded, dome-shaped, pink waxy papules; umbilicated with caseous plug
what should you consider in children who have molluscum contagiosum?
sexual abuse
What is the treatment for molluscum contiagiosum?
resolves on itself, but if desired curettage, cryo, and can try imiquimod too!
What is the presentation of rubella?
fever, headache, URI symptoms followed by pink macules/papules that spread downward from face with Forchheimer’s spots (red/petechial macules on soft palate) and lymphadenopathy are common
How do you treat rubella?
supportive treatment, but is preventative through measles vaccine
What is the presentation of rubeola?
Measles!
3 Cs: cough, coryza (common cold) and conjunctivitis followed by Koplik spots (small white spots with erythematous base) followed by brick red irregular rash, spreads from forehead/hairline to trunk

How do you treat rubeola?
supportive treatment!
vitamin A for children
What can rubeola cause in children that is life-threatening?
pneumonia
What is roseola?
high fever and classical trunk erythema, morbilliform rash, blanchable macules or papules that begin on trunk and spread to extremities.
Mainly in INFANTS!
How do you treat roseola?
supportive treatment
How does scarlet fever present?
sudden onset fever, pharyngitis, followed by N/V, headache, abdominal pain, strawberry tongue, sandpaper-like rash, desquamation, beau’s lines. Redder in axillary and groin areas
How do you treat scarlet fever (scarlatina)?
treat underlying pharyngitis, penicillin, erythromycin
What is erythema infectiosum? “fifth’s disease”
low grade fever followed by **bright red, “slapped cheek” appearance ** with circumoral pallor and lacy, reticulated maculopapular rash on extremities followed by trunk
What is erythema infectiosum associated with?
miscarriage in pregnancy
How do you diagnose and treat erythema infectiosum?
IgM or PCR
Supportive treatment!
What is the presentation of hand, foot, and mouth disease?
sore throat, malaise, cough, headache, followed by erythematous macules becoming painful oral vesicles with erythematous halo
