What is tinea pedis?
pruritis; interdigital erythema and scaling in web spaces; inflammatory on plantar surface
What do you need to do for any suspected fungal diagnosis?
KOH
How do you treat tinea pedis?
topical antifungals 2x daily (ointment for soles/palms) and creams for other areas: allyamines, imidazoles
orals if needed: terbinafine, griseofulvin, fluconazole
What is tinea manuum associated with?
tinea pedis “one hand, two feet”
What is tinea cruris?
pruritus, sharply demarcated border usually in inner thigh area, also associated with tinea pedis
How do you treat tinea cruris, corporis, and faciei?
topical antifungals :)
What is tinea capititis?
black dot sign - broken hairs, single patchy hair loss, crusty papules and pustules “BOGGY”
How do you treat tinea capitis and tinea barbae?
topical selenium sulfide and oral griseofulvin or terbinafine
wash everything
What is onychomycosis?
toenail or fingernail thickening fungal infection
How do you treat onchomycosis?
Higher potency antifungals: fluconazole, griseofulvin, terbinafine
What is cutaneous candidiasis?
erosive, erythematous patch with satellite pustules, intertrigo is a precursor to this infection; this is more serious
How do you treat cutaneous candidiasis?
mild = topical antifungals = imidazoles (ketoconazole)
mod-severe = fluconazole
What is the presentation of intertrigo?
pink to red “beefy” **mascerated, moist plaques, papular rash
in obesity this is common
What is the treatment for intertrigo?
topical antifungals and keep area as dry as possible!
What is diaper dermatitis?
rash from dampness and exposure to urine
