What is violence?
Intense physical force that is directed towards harming another individual or groups of individuals to cause injury
Give some reasons why individuals may become violent (8)
- Frustration
- Rivalries
- Desire to win
- Nature of the sport e.g. boxing
- Media
- Alcohol / drug consumption
- Spectator presence
- Spontaneous outburst
Give an example of an athlete being violent (2)
Luis Suarez - 3 separate biting incidents
Eric Cantona - kicking a fan in the crowd
Give an example of fans being violent (2)
Euro 2020 - England fans fighting each other at Wembley
Leicester fan - ran onto the pitch and attacked Nottingham Forest players
How can violence be prevented? (8)
- Education
- Fair play philosophy
- Officials
- Coach / manager influence
- Punishments -> dock points / fines
- Law enforcements
- Promote friendships between clubs
- Weaker beer / alcohol free zones

What is deindividualisation?
When you lose your sense of being an individual, this can cause violent behaviour
What are the implications on society? (4)
- Role models - so violence may be copied in society
- Put parents off letting their children participate
- Can lead to violence amongst spectators
- Violence in sport could indicate other social issues in wider society
What are the implications on sport? (6)
- Loss of sponsors
- Gives the sport a bad look
- Can make the sport more entertaining
- Loss of public interest / support
- Can reduce participation
- Can initiate changes in laws and rules of a sport to make violence less likely
What are the implications on performers? (4)
- Loss of sponsors
- Injury
- Punishment - disciplinary and even legal action
- Become a negative role model
