What are some legal substances in sport? (5)
- Creatine

- Bicarbonate

What are some advantages of taking legal substances? (3)
- Protein -> Increase muscle growth, repair and muscle mass
- Creatine -> increased PC stores
- Water -> hydration
What are some disadvantages of taking legal substances? (3)
- Takes away element of fair play
- Unknown long term adaptations E.g. Creatine
- Some may have illegal substances in them

Improved performance by altering the body physically
E.g. anabolic steroids for increased strength
Give some social reasons for illegal drug use in sport (5)
- Pressure to win from coaches, peers, politics, media and country (Russia)
- Belief that everyone else is doing it
- Belief that they will not get caught
- Win at all costs attitude
- State sponsored programmes

Improved performance through altering brain function
E.g. Anabolic steroids for increased aggression etc…
What are the consequences of drug use on the performer? (5)
- Improved performance -> increased, chance of winning so they have an unfair advantage
- Physiological health -> addiction, diseases, organ problems etc….
- Psychological health -> depression, aggression etc….
- Punishment -> may be banned, lose medals/trophies, fined
- Reputation -> ruined career + reputation
What are the consequences of drug use on the sport? (5)
- Values -> challenges concept of fair play
- Sponsors -> loss os sponsors due to the bad image
- Lowered participation -> parents may not choose to let their children participate due to the ‘bad look’
- Lowered public support -> may not put their money and time into the sport due to the ‘bad look’
- False records -> individuals not always caught
What are the consequences of drug use on society? (5)
- Negative role models
- Reflection of society -> shows society as ‘win at all costs’
- Implement ban - society may have to make rules to ban all athletes using drugs
- Legalise drugs - society may have to possible accept their athletes as drug takers and make it legal
- Drug testing - more effective processes required
What are some strategies to stop illegal drug use in sport? (6)
1) Stricter punishments - life bans, loss of money / medals / trophies
2) Improved testing - stricter, random, mor regular testing
3) Education - for coaches and performers on the health dangers and legal issues
4) Legalisation - of drugs
5) Research and increased funding - on newer detection methods
6) Use of role models - to encourage drugs free sport, ‘name and shame’ cheats
