4) LC games were violent, simple + limited rules due to them being illiterate - UC vice versa
Law

1) No police force / RSPCA, activities were cruel or violent
2) Many sports had limited rules and
regulations, rules were localised, nothing was illegal

Education
1) What was education like for the 2 classes at this time?
2) What was education like at this time in terms of sport?
1) Only upper class boys were educated and literate, working class and females were generally illiterate
2) Working class could only play simple sports with few, unwritten rules as they were illiterate. Upper class was the opposite
Gender
1) How were women viewed during this time?
2) How did gender affect sport?
1) Women were seen as the ‘weaker sex’ with much fewer rights. They were expected to fulfill the traditional role in the household; cooking, cleaning, raising children
2) Lower participation for women, they had less time to play as they were looking after family, they played sports that were not aggressive e.g. archery, they played different activities to men
Money
1) How was money distributed?
2) What effect did money have on sport?
1) Lower class lived off the land, upper class had disposable income
2) Upper class could afford sports requiring expensive equipment and specialised facilities or transport to get there (LC opposite)
Availability
1) How did the 2 classes availability of time differ?
2) How did availability of time affect sport?
1) Lower class worked long 75 hour weeks, upper class had lots of free time. LC only played on holy days e.g. Christmas
2) Lower class had no time to participate due to long working hours, they had no energy after work, could only participate on bank holidays of which there were few, short activities (UC opposite)
Transport
1) What were the transport methods during this time?
2) How did transport methods affect sport?
3) What did upper class people do to avoid travelling on the poor roads?
1) Horse and car for upper class but poor road conditions, walking for lower class
2) Lower class had to play locally, they couldn’t have leagues / cups, (UC opposite)
3) Built their own facilities at home
