Q

What was the political exploitation of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, USA?

A

Soviet Union boycotted the games

The USA made these games commercial e.g. mass media coverage, adverts, sponsors, merchandise - was the first games to make a profit

The Soviets said this was the reason for their boycott as it went against the Olympic ideals of amateurism - Many believe it was a ‘tit for tat’ / revenge for the USA boycotting the Moscow games 4 years prior
