Viatmins & Minerals Flashcards
What does iron do ?
-iron is needed to form haemoglobins which gives healthy red blood cells their colour. These cells carry oxygen around the body where it helps release oxygen.
-iron is needed to help prevent anaemia which makes you feel tire and look pale
Haem iron
Haem iron is similar to the iron in our blood so it is easy to absorb. It is usually found in animal sources ( eggs are an exception to this rule )
Haem sources (this is easily absorbed so does not need to be eaten with vitamin c)
Beef
Poultry
Fish
Liver
Pork
Non Haem iron
Non-Haem iron cannot be absorbed by the body unless it is eaten with food containing Vitamin C (i.e fruit and vegetables). Non-Haem is found in some plant foods and eggs
Non-Haem iron( this cannot be absorbed without vitamin C)
Eggs
Nuts
Dark green leafy vegetables
Dried fruits
Fortified breakfast cereals
What does vitamin c do
-Vitamin C helps the body absorb NON-HAEM iron
-It boosts the immune system and helps us avoid minor infections such as cold and flu
-it is an antioxidant vitamin which helps protect the body against serious diseases such as coronary heart disease and cancer
Sources of vitamin c
Vitamin C sources include:
Berries
Currants
Kiwi
Cabbage
Peppers
Citrus fruits

-to maintain strong bones and teeth in adults

What is vitamin D sometimes referred as
The sunshine vitamin
Why is it called the sunshine vitamin
It is because when UV light from the sun hits our skin a chemical reaction beneath the surface of the skin occurs which helps the body make its own vitamin D
Functions of vitamin D
The function of vitamin D in the body is to allow the body to absorb and use calcium. It therefore works with calcium to form and maintain strong bones and teeth
