Food poisoning
An illness that can occur 1-36 hours after eating contaminated food. Symptoms may include vomiting,diarrhoea, nausea,abdominal pain and fever.
Contamination
Occurs when something gets into food that should not be there, for example a hair,or a fly. This will affect the quality of the food and can cause food poisoning.
Bacteria
Microscopic organisms ; some of which can cause disease.(singular =bacterium)
Food hygiene
Ensuring that food is safe to eat and free from contamination.
Three examples of potential causes of food poisoning
-Not cooking food properly e.g undercooked chicken which is still pink inside.
-Cross contamination - where bacteria spreads from a contaminated source.
-Not storing food properly e.g fridge temperature are above 5 degrees
-Not handling food hygienically e.g licking your fingers while preparing food.
