what is a finite verb?

A
  • it can stand on its own / does not need an auxiliary verb
  • it must have a subject and number(singular/plural) and tense

*with the subject it makes complete sense
( They argue. She plays)

*It indicates number
(The girl {one} plays netball)

*it has a tense
( Today I play. Yesterday I played)

What is the infinitive?

A
  • when a verb is preceded by the word to it is known as the infinitive
    ( to fight, to play, to study)
  • it cannot stand on its own, it must be preceded by a finite verb
    (They start to fight. We tried to study)
  • the infinitive should never be split
  • i am going to definitely complete my homework(wrong)
  • i am definitely going to complete my homework(correct)

What is an auxiliary verb?

A
  • it is a helping verb.
  • it always precedes the verb
    ( she has done her homework)

-it regulates the tense of the sentence
( we could see the sun rising in the east) - past tense

A

they are formed when we combine an auxiliary verb and a finite verb by adding ing or ed

( the clouds had formed before the storm)

A
