why do we use abbreviations?
to save time
what does an abbreviation usually end in?
A full stop
-however if the abbreviation ends in the last letter of the word the full stop is omitted.
E.g. Dr Mr Mrs
- if the abbreviation consists of the initial letters of words the full stop is omitted
E.g. USA SAA
what is an acronym?
this is when the initials of words form a new word. This word is pronounced as it is spelt and does not require a full stop.
E.g. Aids = Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
