  • the introductory verb is usually followed by a comma
  • the words that are actually being spoken are enclosed within quotation marks and the first word starts with a capital letter

How do we change direct speech to indirect(reported) speech?

A
  1. remove punctuation
  2. change the pronouns
  3. add ‘that’ after the introductory verb
    E.g. Jess said that……
  4. a.) insert ‘if’/’whether’ after a questions using question verbs.
    E.g. The children asked if they could watch a movie
    b.) if the first word of a question is a question word, use that word as a connecting word.
    E.g. “why can’t i eat candy,” asked roxy
    Roxy asked why she can’t eat candy
  5. make sure the tense of the sentence remains the same.
  6. remember adverbs of place and time change in the past tense
