what is direct speech?
these are the words that are actually being said by a person.
what indicates that a sentence is in a direct format?
- it is indicated with inverted commas
what is direct speech often used for?
- for quotations
- to convey the exact words that a person has said
direct speech consists of two parts, what are they?
- a clause containing an introductory verb
E.g. said, asked - the actual words that are spoken
how do we differentiate between the clause containing the introductory verb and the words that are being spoken?
- the introductory verb is usually followed by a comma
- the words that are actually being spoken are enclosed within quotation marks and the first word starts with a capital letter
How do we change direct speech to indirect(reported) speech?
- remove punctuation
- change the pronouns
- add ‘that’ after the introductory verb
E.g. Jess said that…… - a.) insert ‘if’/’whether’ after a questions using question verbs.
E.g. The children asked if they could watch a movie
b.) if the first word of a question is a question word, use that word as a connecting word.
E.g. “why can’t i eat candy,” asked roxy
Roxy asked why she can’t eat candy - make sure the tense of the sentence remains the same.
