Ventilation Part 2 Flashcards
What are the components of the LEV system, and their purpose?
- Hood / exhaust grill/ return air register- air is drawn in to capture contaminant
- Ducts - connect the components
- Air cleaner- removes materials before discharge
- fan and motor- provide energy to draw air through ventilation system
What are the three measurements to take for ventilation systems? What are the symbols?
Velocity (V)
Flow Rate (Q)
Pressure (SP or VP)
Is the velocity uniform throughout the ventilation system?
no
What is the equation for velocity?
Distance/ Time
What are the units for velocity?
feet per minute or meters per second
What tools are used to measure velocity?
Pitot tubes, velometer, anemometer
What does the flowrate measure?
Volume of air/ time
What are the units for flowrate?
cubic feet per minute (CFM)
Cubic meters per second (m3/s)
What tools are used to measure flowrate?
- bubblemeter
- DryCal
- Rotameter
- Critical orifice
- mass flowrate meter
How many types of pressure do local exhaust systems have?
2
What are the two types of pressure in a local ventilation system?
Static pressure (SP) and velocity pressure (VP)
Describe static pressure
exerts pressure on the sides of the duct
- positive on blower side of fan- pushes on the duct sides
- negative on suction side of duct- pulls on duct side
Describe velocity pressure
result of air moving through the system
Positive sign in direction of flow
exerted by moving air in direction of air movement
What is the relationship between VP and V?
V=4005*VP^0.5
Can VP be negative?
No, VP always positive
