Vasculature/ Lymph Flashcards
BV purpose
transport blood or lymph fluid, O2 and nutrients, and exchange of waste products
Pulse
pressure wave that occurs as the heart beats
greater purpose of pulse
maintain CO
O2 delivery
tissue perfusion
CO2 venous return to the lungs
gas exchange
Ischemia
insufficient amount of oxygenated blood in a tissue
Artery
OXYGENATED
blood away from the heart
High pressure
Vein
DEOXYGENATED
return blood and CO2 rich blood to heart and lungs
Valves
prevent backflow of venous blood
Capillary
work against gravity to get back to the heart
what system is parallel to the circulatory
lymphatic
Edema is an issue …
bringing blood back to the heart
profile sign
detects clubbing
Modified allens test
occlude radial and ulnar artery release 1 at a time to see if there is adequate blood flow
what can shiny skin with a lack of hair on an extremity indicate?
arterial blood flow issue
pain, tenderness, swelling, of the lower extremities could indicate
DVT
pitting edema scale
1-4
1- mild pitting slight indentation
2- moderate, indentation go back rapidly
3- deep pitting indent remains leg looks swollen
4- very deep, long lasting indentation, grossly swollen and distorted leg.
ecchymosis
bruising
yellow/ green- old
purple- new
Wells score
for DVT
- 0 or less = low probability
- 3 = high
atherosclerosis
Peripheral blood vessels growing in rigidity/ calcified
- assess for intermittent claudication
intermittent claudication
pain with activity in the calf
goes away with rest
Arterial ulcer
dry/ no bleeding
smooth boarders
keep leg down to increase blood flow to extremities
venous ulcer
stasis (blood can’t get back to the heart)
edema
irregular
brown pigment/ discoloration
RBC breakdown leading to iron deposits
- elevate extremities
