vascular Flashcards
what is peripheral artery disease
its a peripheral vascular disease caused by atherosclerosis within arteries of the limb - especially lower limbs
what is peripheral artery diseases commonly associated with
diabetes and coronary artery disease
how would peripheral artery disease present
could either be gradual or acute. it could be asymptomatic or may present with pain/cramping in lower limbs, changes in skin, leg ulcers, undetectable pulses in legs or feet,
how can peripheral artery disease be detected
can be detected using ultrasound doppler and blood pressure measurements
what is deep vein thrombosis
a pathological formation of a blood cloth within an intact vessel in the deep veins of the limbs
what can cause tissue ichemia/infaction
the thrombis partially or completely occuludes the lumen of the vessels in arteries
what are three main factors whihc promote the formation of deep vein thrombosis
- endothelial injury
- blood stasis
- hypercoagulation
what are risk factors that can promote DVT formation
- surgery
- immobilization
- obesity
- dehydration
- smoking
- coagulopathies
- pregnancy
what is the risk factor with DVT
it can become dislodged and travel causing an embolism
