asthma medication Flashcards
how are sympathomimetics used
they are receptors that are related to the sympathetic nervous system whether a sympathetic can bind to a receptors and cause an effect or bind to inhibit an effect. in resp you want to activate receptors in sympathetic nervous system
how is oxygen used
- Hypoxia is the primary cause of death from exacerbation and oxygen may help to decrease dyspnea, aid bronchodilation, support the myocardium and minimize the risk of arrhythmia
3 examples of sympathomimetics
sabutamol - ventoiln, salmeterol - serevent, terbutaline- bricanyl
what type of. drugs are sympathomimetics
these drugs are agonists at beta 2 adrenergic receptors on bronchiole smooth muscle
what are side effects due to stimulation of beta one receptors
tachycardia, palpitations, tremor, anxiety
when are anticholinergic drugs used
in moderate to severe cases - best used in combination with other therapies
whats an anticholiergic drug
ipatropium - atrovent
when would corticosteroids be used
These types of drugs switch on/off specific genes that code fir proteins involved in the inflammatory process or its regulation. They can take hours to exert the full therapeutic effect
steroid recommendations
moderate or severe cases, decrease admission and relapse if given during the 1st hour of exacerbation, oral steroid more convenient, iv steroids should be administered if pt doesnt respond to oral, no necessary to wean pt if steroids used for less than 7 days
other common medications used for asthma
methylxanthies, leukotrienes, CPAP
