Describe Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
chronic, progressive, fibrotic pneumonia that causes irreversible scarring in the lung tissue
What is Sarcoidosis?
-inflammatory disease consisting of granulomas in multple organs especially the lungs, skin, lymph nodes, eyes, and liver
-Onset: middle age, people of color
-S/S: skin lesions, visual changes, diaphoresis, palpitations, joint pain
What diseases cause alterations in chest wall(Restricted motion of bony thorax)
-Ankylosing Spondylitis
-Arthritis
-Scoliosis
-Pectus excavatum(caved in chest)
-Thoracic burns
-Scleroderma
What diseases cause reduced inability to expand the rib due to decreased muscle strength?
- MS
-Muscular dystrophy

What is a flail chest
a chest in which sections of broken ribs are isolated from, and interfering with, normal chest movements.
What are the characteristics of Pneumothorax?
-Air in the pleural space
-Caused by a blunt or penetrating chest injury(ex: rib fracture that causes a lacerated visceral(inner layer) pleura)
-Tracheal Deviation is away from the diseased side
What is a hemothorax?
-Blood in the pleural space caused by laceration of the parietal pleura(outer layer)
