Validity Flashcards
What is Internal Validity?
Whether the outcomes observed in an experiment are due to the manipulation of the IV and not other factord
How can Internal Validity be influenced?
Confounding and Extraneous variables
Ppts variables and DC
Investigator bias
What is External Validity?
If the findings are generalisable to to other settings, populations and eras
What is Ecological Validity?
The extent to which findings can be generalised to other settings
What is Temporal Validity?
Generalisability to other eras
What is Population Validity?
Generalisability to different populations of various ages, genders and cultures
How can validity be assessed?
Face validity- appears to measure what it is supposed to
Concurrent validity-extent is compares to a similar existing measure
Predictive validity- how well it can predict future events
How can Validity be improved in Experimental research?
Control group- if changes o DV due to IV
Standardised procedures
Single and double blind procedures
How can validity be improved in Questionaires?
A lie scale to assess consistency and control SD
Assurance of anonymity
How can validity be improved in Observations?
Minimal researcher intervention
Covert
Clear Behav Catergories
How can validity be improved in Qualitative methods?
Triangulation-use of a number of different sources such as interviews with family to reduce interpretative bias
