Correlations Flashcards
What are correlational coefficients?
Calculates the strength and relationship between 2 variables
What is a correlation?
A mathematical technique used to investigate the relationship between two variables
What is a negative correlation?
When one variable increases the other decreases
What is the correlation coefficient of a negative correlation?
Less than 0 (-1 is perfect negative)
What is a positive correlation?
As one variable increases so does the other
What is the correlation coefficient of a positive correlation?
More than 0 (+1 is perfect positive)
What is a zero correlation?
No relationship found between variables
What is the correlation coefficient of a zero correlation?
Equal to 0
What is a Curvilinear relationship?
As one variable increases so does the other but only up to a certain point after which as one variable continues to increase the other decreases (inverted u)
What is a directional hypothesis for a correlation?
States whether the correlation will be positive or negative
What is a non-directional hypothesis for a correlation?
States there will be a correlation but type unknown
What is a strength of correlations?
Quick- secondary data can be used
Starting point to justify conducting an experimental study
What is a limitation of correlations?
Difficult to establish cause and effect
Can be missued or misinterpreted as causation
May be a third variable which is actually responsible for the relationship
