Experimental Method Flashcards
What is the experimental method?
The manipulation of the IV to have an effect on the DV which is measured and stated in results. Highly controlled.
What is an aim of research?
The purpose of the study.
What is a hypothesis?
A precise statement which clearly states the relationship between the variables being investigated. A prediction of what will be found.
What is a directional hypothesis?
States the direction of the relationship that will be found between the variables.
What is an non-directional hypothesis?
Does not state the relationship between the variables.
When is a non-directional hypothesis used?
When there is little or contradictory previous research that relates to the studies aim.
What is a null hypothesis?
States that the IV has no effect on the DV.
What is a strength of using a null hypothesis?
It can be proved wrong whereas a normal hypothesis cannot be 100% proved either way.
What is an Independent variable?
The aspect of the research which has been manipulated to have an effect on the DV which is then measured.
What is a Dependent variable?
The aspect of the research which is measured by the researcher and is effected by the IV.
What is the experimental condition?
Used as a comparison to establish cause and effect.
What is operationalisation?
Researcher clearly defines the variables in terms of how they are being measured
