What is Informed Consent?
Participants must be told the purpose of the investigation and about any risks

How can Informed Consent be dealt with?
Prior general consent- permission to take part in many studies where one will involve deception
Presumptive consent- gather opinions from a group like the ppts but not the actual ptts
Retrospective- after study
What is Deception?
Act of deliberately withholding info from pts or misleading them during the study
Acceptable when knowing true nature would let ppts guess aims
How can Deception be dealt with?
Debreifing- written or verbal after the study. Nature of the study must be said and ppts told what data will be used for and can choose whether it it used
What is Protection from Harm?
Ptts must be protected from physical and psychological harm
Right to withdraw if study causing harm
How can Protection from Harm be dealt with?
Researcher provides counselling if psych harm has occured
Cost-Benefit analysis before study- ethics committee weigh up pros and cons to determine if study is ethical
What is Privacy?
The right that ppts have over information about themselves and how it is used
What is Confidentiality?
The right ppts have which concerns any personal data of theirs being protected
How can Privacy and Confidentiality be dealt with?
Anonymity- no personal details so data cannot be traced back (Initials- CW)
Reminders during breifing and debreifing that data will be protected
