Types of data Flashcards
What is qualitative data?
Words not numbers
What is a strength of qualitative data?
Richness and depth
More meaningful insight into ppts
Allows ppts to further develop answers so high external validity
What is a limitation of qualitative data?
Difficult to analyse and make comparisons with other data
Researcher bias- conclusions rely on subjective interpretations
What is quantitative data?
Numbers not words
What is a strength of quantitative data?
Can be analysed numerically and so easy comparisons with other data
What is a limitation of quantitative data?
Lacks depth of detail
No meaningful insight into ppts
Ppts cannot develop opinions so low external validity
What is primary data?
Obtained first hand by the researcher
What is a strength of primary data?
Data fits exact aims and objectives of the research
What is a limitation of primary data?
Time consuming
Expensive
What is secondary data?
Data collected by someone else other than the researcher using it
What is a strength of secondary data?
Quick and easy to access
Minimal effort to collect
What is a limitation of secondary data?
Data may be outdated or incomplete
Validity of research unknown
What is a meta-analysis?
Researcher combines results from many different studies
What is a strength of meta-analysis?
Generalisable as large amount of data (high ecological validity)
What is a limitation of meta-analysis?
Publication bias as researcher may intentionally not publish the negative results (false representation)
