Reliability across all methods of investigation Flashcards
What is reliabilty?
How consistent findings from an investigation are
What is Internal Validity?
Describes how consistent something is within itself
How can Internal validity be assessed?
Split half method- 1/2 questions on one form and 1/2 on the oother two forms of the same test are done separately and should yeild the same score
What is External Validity?
Consistent results are produced regardless of when the investigation is or who administers it
How can External Validity be assessed?
Inter-observer reliability
Test-retest method- same test on same person on different occasions
How can Reliabilty be improved in Questionaires?
Replace some open questions where misinterpretation may occur with some closed, fixed choice questions that are less ambiguous
How can Reliabilty be improved in Interviews?
Same interviewer each time
All interviewers must be properly trained- no leading/ ambiguous questions
Interviewers must be able to structure their interviews in a certain way (Structured Interview more reliable than Unstructured)
How can Reliabilty be improved in Experiments?
Strict control over aspects- instructions given to ppts and conditions (variables)
Repeat to get similar findings
Lab setting
How can Reliabilty be improved in Observations?
Behavioural catergories properly operationalised
Catergories do not overlap
All behaviours covered
