Probability and Significance Flashcards
What is Significance?
How sure we are about a correlation or diference existing
What is a null hypothesis (N0)?
States there is no difference or correlation between the conditions
What is an alternative hypothesis (N1)?
States there is a diference or correlation between the condition
Which hypothesis do we reject if significant?RE
Reject null and accept alternative
What is probability?
How likely it is for an event to happen
What is the usual level of significant if psychology?
0.05 or less
What is a significant P value in psychology?
0.05/ 5% or less
What does a P value of 5% mean for research?
Probability of the difference in the study’s findings being down to chance is 5%
What is the P value if the research has a risk such as human cost (drug trials)?
0.01/ 1%
What is a Type 1 (optimistic) error?
Claiming a hypothesis is true but it isn’t
False positive
What is a Type 2 (pessimistic) error?
Claiming a hypothesis is false but it is true
False negative
