Vaccines Flashcards
What are the pros of Live, attenuated vaccines?
They retain ability to replicate, promoting humoral and cell-mediated responses. Dont need booster shots.
What are the cons of live, attenuated vaccines?
May mutate back to pathogenic form. May have more side effects. May require a cold chain for stability during transport.
What are the pros of inactivated vaccines?
No reversion to pathogenic form. Often more stable/easy to store and transport.
What are the cons of inactivated vaccines?
Require booster shots. Dont replicate in host so no cell mediated immunity. manufacturing risk.
What are subunit vaccines?
Use purified macromolecules derived from pathogen.
What are recombinant vector vaccines?
attenuated pathogen genetically egineered to carry another pathogens genes and express them.
What are DNA vaccines?
Plasmids carrying pathogen genes injected into muscle tissue where host cells take up and express internally.
What is adjuvants?
chemicals that can help enchance the immune response to vaccine.
What are the following Adjuvants and what can they help in vaccine immune response? (Alum,MF59,Quil A)
Alum=Stimulates Th2
MF59=oil in water emulsion that slows ag delivery
Quil A= Saponin, aids in antigen penetration.
