Vaccines Flashcards
Vaccines are composed of three part mixture:
Antigens
Adjuvant
Preservative
Antigens
Piece of the pathogen which pieces to use is a complication question
Adjuvant
A general term for a substance that irritates the immune system, causing activation
Preservative
Vaccines must travel and be stored until use, and so need stabilizing components
The antigens can either be:
Live attenuated
Or inactivated pathogens
Or
mRNA
mRNA vaccine
Contains just the mRNA that codes for an antigen
Contained in a lipid or an inactivated viral capsid
What do live attenuated vaccines do
Take the pathogen and alter its genome to remove virulence factors. It can still replicate, but won’t make you sick.
Inactivated vaccines
Either the whole pathogen with genome removed, or just pieces of the pathogen (no genetic info)
