Urinary system Flashcards
Ureters
Fine tubes which transport urine from each kidney to the bladder
Bladder
Organ that temporarily stores urine
Urethra
Fine tube which transports urine from the bladder to outside of the body
Sphincter
Ring of muscles at end of bladder that controls exit of urine into urethra
Cortex
Outermost layer of kidney; feels slightly rough due to the presence of the glomeruli; filtration of the blood occurs here
Medulla
Innermost layer of kidney that contains the lower part of each nephron, such as the loop of Henle; feels smoother
Renal pelvis
Funnel shaped space at top of ureter where urine collects
Glomerulus
A bundle of capillaries; blood is under high pressure which forces materials into bowman’s capsule
Bowman’s capsule
Filtrate enters tubule at this location
Kidneys
Bean shaped organs where blood is filtered of harmful substances
3 main functions of kidneys
- filter the blood
- remove waste
- produce urine
Loop of henle
The section of tubule in a nephron where urine becomes concentrated by the removal of water. Reabsorption also occurs
