Macromolecules Exam Flashcards
Protein monomer/polymer
Monomer: amino acids
Polymer: polypeptide
Lipids and there subunits
=fats, waxes or oils
Subunits: glycerol and fatty acids. E.g. Triglycerides and fatty acids
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) monomer/polymer
Monomer: nucleotide
Polymer: DNA
What does a DNA nucleotide consist of
Deoxyribose sugar, phosphate part, nitrogen containing base
4 nitrogenous bases for DNA
Adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine
RNA (Ribonucleic acid) monomer/polymer
Monomer: nucleotide
Polymer: RNA
What does each RNA nucleotide consist of
Ribose sugar
Phosphate part
Nitrogen containing base
4 RNA nitrogenous bases
Adenine
Uracil
Guanine
Cytosine
Three different types of RNA
Ribosomal RNA
Messenger RNA
Transfer RNA
Ribosomal RNA (rRNA)
Together with proteins, make ribosomes
Messenger RNA (mRNA)
Carries genetic message to ribosomes where the message is translated into a protein
Transfer RNA (tRNA)
Carry amino acids to ribosomes where they construct proteins
Carbohydrate monomer/polymer
Monomer: monosaccharide (e.g. Glucose)
Polymer: polysaccharide (e.g. glycogen, starch, cellulose)
